Can't get a loan at your bank even though you always paid your bills but because an algorithm says, you're not credible? Your family profiled in detail on parameters like mental health issues, phases of unemployment or a forgotten agreement at the school dentist? Systems for automated decision-making (ADM) are already widely used around Europe. But how algorithms are used and controlled differs widely. The recently launched report “Automating Society – Taking Stock of Automated Decision-Making in the EU” by AlgorithmWatch and Bertelsmann Stiftung assesses a wide variety of uses, pointing to regulatory gaps and suggesting better European coordination on the issue. We will outline how we framed the issue, convened the EU-wide network of contributors, and researched the state of play in 12 countries; in addition, we will assess the impact and discuss where we want to go from here.
