From local stories to big impact: the case of Housing

German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung managed to collect data from 57,000 people and around 3,000 stories for a project to report on the rental market. Long, in-deep stories featuring rich data visualisations showed how broken the rental market has become, and contributed to change the conversation about housing in Germany.
Last year in the UK, the Bureau Local learned that no official body counted the number of homeless people who die and t that the number was around 450 deaths per year. The bureau set out to tell the human stories behind that number. The result was 94 local stories published all over the UK that paint an amazing and terrifying picture about access to housing in Britain. The findings sparked outrage amongst homeless charities and prompted the Office for National Statistics to start producing its own figure on homeless deaths.
Marseille has also become known for his crumbling housing infrastructure. Last November eight people were killed when two buildings collapsed near the old port. How could a city that attracts so many tourists allow its own residents to live in such poor conditions? That's what local investigative media outlet Marsactu set out to find out. Dozens of articles later, last month the French prime minister, Marseille municipality and the national agency of urban renovation signed a protocol of 117 million euros to invest in social housing.
In this session, we'll hear from the people behind those three reporting projects.
