While air pollution in European cities and towns continues to exceed EU and WHO limits and guidelines and keeps posing a danger to human health and the environment (according to the European Environment Agency), the issue doesn't feature too prominently in most mainstream media. Reporting on air quality may be challenging a challenge for some media given the complexities of the issue and the lack of hyperlocal data. But local journalism and crowdsourcing of local data are well suited to reporting on air quality and pollution. In this session we'll hear about a project carried out by Flemish newspaper De Standaard, in which the journalists teamed up with Antwerp University, the Flemish government and research organisation VITO to crowdsource data from 20,000 citizens and then presented it a visual and very informative way.
