All under one roof? Should journalists work with other groups?

It's one of those questions in which it seems we just can't agree: should journalists work along with academic researchers? And what about advocates? And activists? We all produce content in different 'languages' and aimed at different audiences (or do we?), and we also work in different time cycles. Plus journalists are supposed to be independent and impartial, as supposedly should be academic researchers, right? But then, and thinking of housing, there's for instance a lot of interesting and highly relevant academic research being done in Europe that goes unnoticed by most media and then by the general public, and that could have helped to increase the issue's visibility and put more pressure on decision-makers to address it. Or maybe that's not the role of academic research? Advocacy organisations produce a lot of interesting research that goes unnoticed by mainstream audiences. Maybe they could partner up with media outlets across Europe – or maybe actually that's not a good idea. Then, the same data sets can be used in different ways by journalists, scholars, advocates and other researchers; so it might be worth it to join forces at the data-gathering stage. Or maybe not? In this session, we will have a conversation about those issues and will explore the different pros and cons.
